Govt panel recommends upholding of net neutrality in India

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) on Thursday came out with its much awaited report on the issue of net neutrality in India. The DoT panel, which was looking into the issue, said that the net neutrality is a vital to the good internet experience and that "the committee unhesitatingly recommends that the core principles of net neutrality must be adhered to".

While the DoT recommendations are not yet binding on any entity, they may help TRAI, the telecom regulator in India, and government to come up with norms that would uphold and safeguard the net neutrality.

Promising start-ups in e-commerce and e-retail space are the ones that will change the face of Indian merchandising and marketing business, Tata Sons Chairman Emeritus Ratan Tata said today.

"For the last three years, I have been a free person (by not in command of the Tata Group). If I look at the landscape, I see the future in young managers, the young start-ups. It is what I saw in United States in the 70s and 80s," he said.

To rectify this situation, CBDT has announced that a taxpayer who furnishes his Aadhaar card number in the return form need not send a physical copy of ITR-V to CPC. Under the new system of verification, termed as Electronic Verification Certification (EVC), the process of verification will be as under:

  • Step 1: The taxpayer furnishes his Aadhaar card number in the return form while filing the return online;
  • Step 2: He then receives a verification code in form of a one-time password (OTP) on the mobile phone number associated with the Aadhaar card;
  • Step 3: He enters the verification code at the time of e-filing to authenticate and complete the process.

The Postal Department's strategy to focus on fast growing e-commerce segment has bore fruits as it saw a 37% jump in parcel revenues in the past year.

The increase in parcel revenues is in stark contrast to 2% decline in 2013-14, an official of the Communications and IT Ministry said.

Telephone connections cross one billion mark in India

The total number of telephone connections in India crossed one billion mark in May, data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) said here on Saturday.

The total number of telecom subscription stood at 1,002.05 million at the end of May, out of which 975.78 million were wireless connections and 26.27 were wireline.

Antivirus service ESET published a post Thursday detailing how an app available on Google Play, the company's app store for Android devices, was able to grab private information from users.

Internet Society - Beyond the Net Funding Programme

The Beyond the Net funding programme provides financial support of up to 30000 USD.
There are three sizes of grants:

1. Small projects you can finish in a short time
Up to 3500 USD. These supports one-off projects that address a particular community need.
2. Medium-scale funding
Up to 10000 USD. These projects will typically be completed within a year, focusing on lasting solutions to local challenges.
3. Large-scale funding
Up to 30000 USD. These projects will typically be completed within two years and will tackle several challenges affecting the Internet Society community.

RBI introduces prepaid cards for mass transit systems

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Thursday introduced a new category of semi-closed prepaid payment instruments (PPIs) for mass transit systems.

In its guidelines, the central bank said these cards will be issued by mass transit system operators such as metro rail networks and bus or taxi service providers, and can be used for transportation within these systems.

Indian DEITY plans 14 Exabyte cloud storage rig

The service offers a Gigabyte for eligible citizens, which isn't a lot. Until you multiply it by India's 1.4 billion citizens and get to a potential for 14 Exabytes if the system ever fills up. Of course not all will be able to, or choose to, use the service, but there's still potential for this to become a truly ginormous storage rig.
